IIT Bhilai hosts an august and memorable convocation
The Indian Institute of Technology Bhilai held its 3rd and 4th Convocation with grandeur on 26
October
2024 at Nalanda Hall in its campus. The Hon’ble President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu, was the
Chief
Guest of the ceremony and delivered the Convocation Address. Shri Raman Deka, Hon’ble Governor of
Chhattisgarh, and Shri Vishnu Deo Sai, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, were the Guests of
Honour. Shri Krishnamurthi Venkataramanan, Chairman Board of Governors, IIT Bhilai, presided over
the
ceremony. IIT Bhilai’s permanent campus was dedicated to the nation earlier this year on 20th
February
by the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. The Hon’ble President’s visit to the permanent

In this convocation, 396 students who graduated in 2023 and 2024 were conferred degrees. The
graduating
students of batch 2023 included 13 PhD, 11 MSc, 27 MTech, 13 BTech (Honours), and 123 BTech
graduates.
The graduating batch of 2024 had 8 PhD, 20 MSc, 19 MTech, 12 BTech (Honours), and 150 BTech
graduates.
The convocation ceremony began with the arrival of the academic procession. The Chief Guest and the
Guests of Honour were welcomed by Shri Krishnamurthi Venkataraman. Prof Rajiv Prakash, Director, IIT
Bhilai, felicitated the Hon’ble President and other dignitaries who graced the occasion with their
august presence. Prof Prakash spoke of the institute’s vision to develop actionable solutions for
the
issues confronting the tribal communities of the state. He also outlined key accomplishments of the
institute, including a steady rise in female students and scholars admitted to IIT Bhilai, sustained
research on indigenous knowledge systems to boost farmers’ yield, and engagement with key
stakeholders
such as the Bhilai Steel Plant to augment productivity. Shri K Venkataramanan, in his address, drew
attention to the institute’s commitment to setting up new benchmarks for responsive education,
innovative research, and holistic training of bright, young minds.
Shri Vishnu Deo Sai congratulated all the graduands in his address. He welcomed the institute’s
commitment towards working for the state, noting the establishment of a state-of-the-art IT Park as
well
as the setting up of an AI-based Vidya Samiksha Kendra as prime examples of this ongoing endeavour.
Shri
Ramen Deka, in his address felicitating the graduating students, stated that IIT Bhilai had
fulfilled a
long-standing lacuna in the higher education ecosystem of the state and that in a short span of
time,
the institute made significant progress in carving its space in the hearts and minds of the people
of
Chhattisgarh.
The Institute Gold Medal winners, Director’s Gold Medal winners, and Senate Awardees received their
medals from the Hon’ble President. The Institute Gold Medals for the BTech student who secured the
highest CGPA in 2024 and 2023 batches were received by Mr Nomaan Alam Kherani and Mr Shashwat
Jaiswal,
respectively. Mr Yash Teckchandani and Mr Madhur Bhattad received the Director’s Gold Medal for
BTech
students based on overall performance in both academic and extracurricular domains, while Mr Sidagam
Rohit and Mr Satya Vikram Pratap Singh were awarded the Director’s Gold Medal for MTech in 2024 and
2023, respectively. The Director’s Gold Medal for Outstanding Female Student with overall academic
excellence in BTech, BTech (Honours), and MSc was awarded to Ms Vidhi Mittal. Senate Awards were
presented to students who secured the highest CGPA in different branches and programmes.
In the Convocation Address, the Hon’ble President, Smt Murmu, appreciated IIT Bhilai’s holistic
contributions towards the sustainable development of the indigenous and tribal peoples of
Chhattisgarh.
The institute’s curriculum development, which aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020,
and
the outreach activities undertaken through IIT Bhilai Innovation and Technology Foundation (IBITF),
providing investment opportunities and platforms to incubate socially relevant research, received
particular mention in the President’s Convocation Address. The ceremony concluded on a note of
accomplishment and satisfaction, enthusing the participants with a renewed zest to work towards the
cause of social upliftment and national development.
